Sports Betting Bill Approved By State House Committee

A sports betting bill will be moving forward at the state Capitol.

The House Criminal Justice Committee approved the bill yesterday, which would allow voters to decide the legality of sports betting in their parishes. The bill does not allow mobile betting, but allows betting inside casinos, riverboats and racetracks for those 21 and over.

Some worry the bill might worsen gambling addictions, but it also reserves $750,000 of the revenue from betting for programs on gambling addiction and therapy as well as more revenue for early childhood education.

It will now head to the House floor for a full vote.
